Green eggs and ham
January 4th, 2008 by Nathan
One of our chickens started laying this last weekend.
Of the six chickens we have only one of them has been laying eggs for the last few months. The rest of them were too young. The chicken that started laying is one of the Americaunas. We don’t know which one yet. The cool thing is that Americaunas lay green or blue eggs. Apparently ours is laying green.
The chickens seem to be handling the “winter” very well. We haven’t had any problems with them being too cold. I put a heating lamp in their coop and a tarp over it to try and minimize drafts.
During this holiday season I have been especially pleased with their ability to consume whatever kitchen scraps we give them. After Christmas I gave them the entire turkey carcass (I don’t need more turkey stock right now). They had the bones picked clean in an hour. I’ll bet if I had cooked the bones as I usually do they would have been soft enough to be picked apart as well.
It’s time to till my garden again. I am only going to plant onions, garlic, and shallots this weekend. The chickens will be parked over the tilled garden to eat bugs until planting everything else next month.
